The 5th Asian Trans-Disciplinary Karst Conference 2024

Conference Date. 12 Aug 2024 - 15 Aug 2024

Asian Trans-Disciplinary Karst Conference was initially organized by Faculty of Geography, Universitas Gadjah Mada on 2011. Afterwards, this conference was held in Guilin, China on 2015 and Cebu, The Philippines on 2019. It invited researchers, karstologists, speleologists, and explorer across Asia continent to gather and share knowledge and experience for better management and karst and cave protection efforts.

Human activity and economic development heavily impact the ecosystem and the planet’s condition, altering fundamental processes and characteristics. The impact human-induced is so heavy it generates a new age of Anthropocene and could be starkly seen by the pollution, climate change, and disaster frequency. Karst area as one of the primary landscapes on this planet suffers from human activity and record the symptoms of the Anthropocene in its chemical composition, geomorphology, and ecosystem change both at the surface and sub-surface. The human activity and Anthropocene phenomena become a perilous threat to the sustainability of the karst area and, eventually, devastate the livelihood of the people themselves. Whereas, the karst area provides crucial and essential services for humans from its ecosystem dynamic. Humans in karst areas may enjoy soil, water, and recreation from the karstic systems.

Asia, the continent of contrast, contains myriad of diversities. This continent spans through several climatic types and sits on various lithological settings and home to countless cultures. The importance of this continent to the life of this planet could be obviously seen from its karst area. Karst in Asia Continent nurtures livelihood of tens of millions through the water it flows and crops it produces. Therefore, it is imperative to protect and manage the karst in this continent with strict precautions to ensure the sustainability and the preservation of its important value.
